WHEN WE SING TOGETHER: ZILPHIA HORTON AND THE “FOLK APPROACH” OF HIGHLANDER FOLK SCHOOL, 1935-1956

Zilphia Horton, the cultural director at Highlander Folk School from 1935 until 1956, developed a folk approach to arts education for workers that started at their cultural roots and grew into creative solidarity. As she put it, the arts – “all these things that we think make life richer” like singing, poetry, and literature – are like the water lily: “what’s at the top is really dependent on what goes on underneath.”
